FAQs
What is a voter key?
A string of numbers and letters that permits one to vote in our Election. A voter key will be provided for every voter upon registration, whether in-person paper ballot or online.
How do I obtain a voter key?
One must register for a voter key at some point or another. An in-person paper ballot voter will receive their key as they register at the polling station (and instantly use it). Online voters will receive their key a day in advance of the election if they register before the deadline.
Can I vote online if I don't register in advance?
No, online voting requires advance registration through the link above due to the absence of an established membership list at this time.
If I register for online voting can I still vote in person if I change my mind?
Yes, registration for online voting does not bar you from voting in-person, it just gives you the option. An online voter key may be redeemed either online or in-person for paper ballot.
How secure is electionbuddy?
Each vote in SSL encrypted and the voter key assures no personal information is tied to the voter (granted, a separate document can be extracted if fraud is suspected). Results of the election are impossible to tamper with by admin once the election is started. Our ability to even make small edits once the election is open is nil... we have to contact electionbuddy themselves to even correct typo! Have a look through the FAQs of election buddy: electionbuddy.eventiq.com ("voter questions" is the section you want).
Is my information safe with St. John's Pride if I register with the Google Doc?
While St. John's Pride will take every precaution to safeguard your personal information we remind voters that we do not have the resources of a larger institution, such as an encrypted databank. All information will be encrypted onto a external hard drive after the election and entrusted to the care of the Internal Co-Chair behind lock and key. All voters are advised to exercise caution and be aware of the risks of giving out personal information online. Please do not use any security question that is a password to your bank account etc.
II don't feel comfortable with the question I'm being asked in order to register to vote. What are my options?
We are committed to eliminating obstacles to voting. Voters who do not wish to give out information for this registry can email krees@stjohnspride.ca for accommodations that can be made within reason (such as alternate means of validating your identity aside from the provided security questions).
Are all these questions necessary? Why so long, and can I just skip it by voting in-person?
The questions we asked are a combination of the requirements by the Registry of Companies and our own considerations for establishing what constitutes a stakeholder (which we intentionally made as open and liberal a definition as possible). No matter how you vote you will still be asked to fill out a short voter registration form at the polling station to establish yourself as a member of St. John's Pride's electorate.
Who will monitor the authenticity and integrity of the election process? Where do I report suspicious activity?
Pamela Sheaves has been named the CRO (Chief Returning Officer) for the 2014 General Election. Pam will be present during all aspects of the election process including email validation for online voters and tallying the votes. Any voter who has suspicions about unfair campaigning, candidate misconduct or voter fraud should contact her by emailing psheaves@stjohnspride.ca.
Will candidates be able to name scrutineers if they desire to supervise the tallying of votes?
Yes, candidates may name scrutineers anytime before the votes are being tallied. Scrutineers must be available for the entire time the polls are open (3pm-7pm) on October 5th.
