The Directors-at-Large constitute the majority of the Board of Directors, double that of the Co-Chairs. Directors-at-Large (DAL) work on a system of "project portfolios" which are chosen by the Director upon their election based on their strengths and interests (granted some portfolios may have to be assigned if not voluntary taken). Ideally, these portfolios would be distributed equally, but this is dependent on the individual Directors and their availability and presence of other commitments. However, general duties and responsibilities include:
serve a one (1) year term (notwithstanding removal or voluntary leave)
in tandem with the other Board members, ensure the productivity of the Board as a whole
partner with, support, and when necessary assist and be assisted by one (1) Co-Chair
give regular verbal or written reports and be accountable to the Co-Chair most closely aligned with your project portfolio
complete a comprehensive year-end report and annual return by August of each year
Here are some of the working titles of current project portfolios passed down by the 2014 Board (to be amended, amalgamated, and created as St. John's Pride needs shift and grow organically):
Administrative Officer (linked to Co-Chair Internal unless delegated)
City Liaison (linked to Co-Chair Internal unless delegated
Events Coordinator (linked to Co-Chair External unless delegated)
Finance Officer (linked to Co-Chair Finance unless delegated)
Sponsorship Coordinator (typically performed by Co-Chair Finance unless delegated)
Inclusion Advocate
Grant Writer
Branding and Corporate Image Coordinator
Community Liaison
Website Coordinator
Festival Programming
Festival Site Coordinator(s) (2)
Parade Coordinator(s) (2)
Internal Structuring
Community Connections and Outreach
The best method of campaigning for a Director-at-Large is perhaps to emphasize your strengths, skills, and work experience rather than campaign on certain portfolios as this system is inherently flexible and fluid and many Directors may in fact share one portfolio (such as Festival Programming, which all 9 members must work on collectively) or otherwise overlap with another's duties.

Good day folks: I am running for a director at large position this year. I have been involved with St Johns Pride for the last seven years in different capacities. I did one term as a director at large in 2013 with a perfect attendance record. I have acted as the parade safety/security coordinator/consultant for the last seven years. I have also acted as the returning officer during last years elections. I organized the first election for an elected board in 2010. I had at the time lengthy discussions with the then organizers about the requirement for an elected board with a mandate from our LGBTQ community. I have acted as an independent advocate and mentor for our LGBTQ community from 2009 to the present.
I am a security professional in St Johns with many years of experience. I created and admin LGBTQ Atlantic and World news group on Facebook. I use this group to connect and share news from Pride groups throughout Atlantic Canada. I have been interviewed by the media many times since 2009 and have a large number of contacts from business, professional, non profit and political organizations. I have been an advocate for inclusion of school aged, senior, and LGBTQ families for many years.
I will if elected be bringing some recommendations to the board. I would like to have the dates for Pride week set much earlier in the year. This would accommodate members and LGBTQ tourists who might wish to schedule vacation time around Pride Week. I would like to see Pride Week increased to include the weekend before, to better accommodate the increasing number of private community/business events and reduce overlap. I would like to see an open arts and crafts show by our members included in our annual chocolate and wine event. I am a strong believer in engaging with members of our community who are often overlooked. Another of my recommendations if elected, will be to invite representatives from different age and interest groups to consult directly with the board. I believe that due to our growing Pride Week events and attendance, we need work to build a larger volunteer base. This would give general members of our community more opportunities to contribute directly to St John's Pride. I would like to see an educational/trade show day providing members of our community, information and contacts for everything from GSAs, Pflag, Egale, Planned Parenthood, LGBTQ friendly child care, legal, financial advice, to health and seniors care issues. I believe that the Trans members of our community are especially vulnerable when it comes to many of these topics and require special consideration. I am also interested in creating a volunteer based outreach program for members in hospital, and care homes.
I believe my background and interests make me a good candidate for Parade Coordinator, as well as Inclusion Advocate and Community Liaison. I have had a long involvement with our community and intend to continue to be a life long advocate for LGBTQ folks. Please feel free to ask any questions or to contact me directly through Facebook. In closing I would like to thank you, our community for your interest and engagement in this years elections.
Sincerely Pam Sheaves

My name is Meghan Keating and I submit my name of position of Member-at-Large/ Director with St. John's Pride. I am relatively new to St. John's Pride, having been officially a member for about a year. I am a recent graduate of the University of New Brunswick Faculty of Law and also hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Literature from Memorial University, as well as a Diploma in Performance and Communications Media. I currently working as the Volunteer Recruiter with St. John's South-Mount Pearl federal NDP candidate Ryan Cleary. Over the past few years, I have worked with LGBTQ groups in Fredericton and St. John's, and advocated for equality for all genders within those communities. During my time at UNB I focused largely human rights law and wrote extensively on issues facing the LGBTQ community, including expanding public private-spaces like change rooms and bathrooms for trans people. I worked as the Voices Against Sexual Aggression Coordinator with the UNB Sexuality Centre, giving presentations on preventing sexual violence. In nominating myself for the Member-at-Large of St. John's Pride, I hope to bring my legal skills to the board, as well as coordination skills from many experiences of production management and event planning. Most of all, I want to put my passion for LGBTQ issues to work for the community of St. John's and to assist a group that makes me so happy.

My platform includes: - increasing involvement with members of St. John's Pride through more events that showcase the talents and contributions of our members, including art shows and readings; - bringing awareness to issues facing LGBTQ youth, especially homelessness and mental health problems through campaigns and fundraisers; - working with members of the wider St. John's community and NL government to create a safer and more just place for transgender, two spirit, and non-binary folks, including Newfoundland and Labrador Sexual Assault Prevention and Crisis Centre, law enforcement, Public Legal Information Association of NL, etc.; - engaging with seniors to create quality LGBT-positive spaces in care homes and hospitals; - directed focus on outreach to members of the community who identify as persons of colour and increasing inclusion for racialized queer folk.

Thanks everyone!

First Taylor: If I could organize one event it would be a trade show like day. We would have booths representing legal advice, seniors resource center, GSA's, Pflag, Egal, financial advise, Eastern Health, child care, RNC, and LGBTQ owned businesses to provide information and advice to members of our community.
Jordan, I believe my long time involvement in our community in many capacities, connections with other organizations outside our community directly, business experience, and life experience brings to the table a level of understanding of what is required to run St Johns Pride. I also believe very strongly in fairness, democracy and engagement with our community to provide what our community wants and needs from their board.

Taylor: if I could organize one event during Pride week, I would love to organize an open forum for self identified people who have disabilities, mental health issues AND are LGBTQ. My inspiration for this is the Disability caucus forum that occurred during CUQSC (Canadian university Queer Services conference) at MUN St John's campus in May of 2013. Having people there trained with active listening skills where people could discuss the co-morbidity of having mental health issues, disabilities of any kind and being LGBTQ. As a LGBTQ person with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), ADD/ADHD and OCD like symptoms, but also having mild PDD (pervasive development disorder), I would love to personally organize an event on these themes using my connections in both the LGBTQ and disability communities in St. John's and the greater St. John's area

Hello everyone, my name is Jordan Willis Lester (also known as Jasmine Leicester Sapphire). I am a recent MUN (Memorial University of Newfoundland) St. John's Campus graduate residing in the Town of Paradise near the borders with St. John's, Mount Pearl, etc.
I graduated from MUN in April/May 2015 with a BA (Bachelor of Arts) Communication Studies Major, Political Science minor.
I identify as a queer Pansexual non-monogamous/polyamourous transfeminine woman. I am a past volunteer and current member of the LGBT MUN resource centre and was a candidate last year for cochair external and member at large, but this year I am running for member at large.
Here's what I would like to bring to St. John's Pride Inc. as one of your 6 Members at Large:
1) As a semi-self employed person in training for a financial services marketing company, I bring with me a knowledge of sound money management.
I feel this would make me a good fit for helping on the Finance committee to help whoever becomes the Cochair Finance of St. John's Pride Inc.
2)I have extensive experience with student academic societies, LGBT MUN and the MUN DISC resource centres, MUN debate and other such ventures.
3)I want to bring the benefits of network marketing into play in growing St. John's Pride inc.
4) I am willing to work on any and all of the committees of St. John's Pride inc and I promise I will serve out my full 12 month term to the very last day.
5) I have extensive media training and have done several media interviews in the past and would love to codify a document on best practices in media and public relations for St. John's Pride Inc.
6) I want to focus on helping market St. John's Pride Inc more to LGBTQ people who intersect with other communities such as the disability rights community, middle aged and senior LGBTQ people, as well as more promoting of St. John's pride inc in the suburbs surrounding St. John's such as Paradise, Torbay, CBS, Portugal Cove St Phillips, etc.
There is so much more I could say but I will save the rest for responding to others on the ProBoards, but also on Saturday @ the in-person voting place (where there be an opportunity for in-person speeches, like there was in fall of 2014?
Also, will there be an AGM summarizing the current finances of SJPI? That information will be vital for me to answer more at length what I could do if elected as one of the 6 members at large on SJPI BOD.
Most of all, don't forget to register to vote online and/or vote in person!
Happy democracy and SJPI voting!
Sincerely, Jordan Willis Lester -Member at Large candidate (a.k.a. Jasmine Leicester Sapphire)

Thanks for the questions, Taylor and Jordan! First, if I could organize one event during Pride week, I would want to organize a multi-media open mic and coffeehouse. I think it would be an opportunity for all the amazingly talented writers, singers, performers, dancers, etc. to showcase their skills and original work, especially works that relate pto issues that face LGBTQ folks. I think it would offer a great opportunity to foster community through artistic expression.
Second, for Jordan: I think what potentially sets me apart (my unique skills perhaps) is that I've got a strong legal background. My personal focus has been on human rights, particularly the issues around the LGBTQ community. Additionally I have the analytical, planning, and organizational skills that come with legal studies and work.
I also have experience sitting as a member of organizations and planning committee, which I think could benefit a fantastic organization like St. John's Pride.
