Hello everybody!
Tj here.
Serving as a member of the St. John's Pride Board this past year has been an incredibly educating and rewarding experience. I would like to take what that experience has taught me and put it right back into contributing to make this coming year even better as your new Co-Chair External.
As part of the Board I was given the opportunity to: - facilitate conversations around gender and sexuality for students of various schools around the City, where I was fortunate enough to share my lived experience and help provide tools to the younger members of our community to further navigate their developing identities. This is something I would very much like to continue doing, and hope to help increase the voice and presence of this age group in planning Pride's future events. - develop and set up the site at Quidi Vidi as a Festival Site Coordinator, and establish a working relationship with contractors and local community affiliates that wanted a presence. I feel I am greater prepared for what this entails, and can offer valuable insight towards making next year even bigger. - learn many of the administrative sides to organizing a Festival of this scope, including completing City applications and obtaining the necessary Insurance coverage for a week of events, to name a few.
With the reputation I have begun to build in St. John's as an accessible educator and activist, and the skills I have developed and further honed this last year, I believe myself to be an excellent candidate to continue the work of previous Boards in presenting an approachable face of St. John's Pride Inc. to our community, city, and hopefully province. And I hope you agree. I will endeavour to continue earning your support with my work ethic and personable nature, and would love the opportunity to continue helping St. John's Pride grow to what it could be. We only have bigger and better to get, b'ys!
Thank you for your time, and ask away with any questions you may have!
Tj

To All Co-chair External Candidates: what (if any) experience do you have in terms of branding, media and public relations?
And what do you feel is unique about your candidacy? What unique skills, experiences, education, etc. can you bring to this role?

Good day folks: Due to lack of nominations and my belief that strong chairs are required for the running of the board I have switched from director at large to External chair position this year.
I have been involved with St Johns Pride for the last seven years in different capacities. I did one term as a director at large in 2013 with a perfect attendance record. I have acted as the parade safety/security coordinator/consultant for the last seven years. I have also acted as the returning officer during last years elections. I organized the first election for an elected board in 2010. I had at the time lengthy discussions with the then organizers about the requirement for an elected board with a mandate from our LGBTQ community. I have acted as an independent advocate and mentor for our LGBTQ community from 2009 to the present.
I am a security professional in St Johns with many years of experience. I created and admin LGBTQ Atlantic and World news group on Facebook. I use this group to connect and share news from Pride groups throughout Atlantic Canada. I have been interviewed by the media many times since 2009 and have a large number of contacts from business, professional, non profit and political organizations. I have been an advocate for inclusion of school aged, senior, and LGBTQ families for many years.
I will if elected be bringing some recommendations to the board. I would like to have the dates for Pride week set much earlier in the year. This would accommodate members and LGBTQ tourists who might wish to schedule vacation time around Pride Week. I would like to see Pride Week increased to include the weekend before, to better accommodate the increasing number of private community/business events and reduce overlap. I would like to see an open arts and crafts show by our members included in our annual chocolate and wine event. I am a strong believer in engaging with members of our community who are often overlooked. Another of my recommendations if elected, will be to invite representatives from different age and interest groups to consult directly with the board. I believe that due to our growing Pride Week events and attendance, we need work to build a larger volunteer base. This would give general members of our community more opportunities to contribute directly to St John's Pride. I would like to see an educational/trade show day providing members of our community, information and contacts for everything from GSAs, Pflag, Egale, Planned Parenthood, LGBTQ friendly child care, legal, financial advice, to health and seniors care issues. I believe that the Trans members of our community are especially vulnerable when it comes to many of these topics and require special consideration. I am also interested in creating a volunteer based outreach program for members in hospital, and care homes.
I believe my background and interests make me a good candidate for Parade Coordinator, as well as Inclusion Advocate and Community Liaison. I have had a long involvement with our community and intend to continue to be a life long advocate for LGBTQ folks. Please feel free to ask any questions or to contact me directly through Facebook. In closing I would like to thank you, our community for your interest and engagement in this years elections.
Sincerely Pam Sheaves

Jordan, I believe my long time involvement in our community in many capacities, connections with other organizations outside our community directly, business experience, and life experience brings to the table a level of understanding of what is required to run St Johns Pride. I also believe very strongly in fairness, democracy and engagement with our community to provide what our community wants and needs from their board. I have experience and business connections in media, interviews, business, public relations and communications not only as it relates directly to St Johns Pride but also in my professional life in security.
